Ange & Wendy, two Sydney, Australia broadcasters, have teamed up for a 20-minute spot, Is It Just Me?
Episode 1 (links to podcast) covered Brazilian waxes (yes, they have them Down Under) but then moved north for a facial cosmetic surgery discussion.
The jumping-off point was My Beautiful Mommy, a book by American Dr. Michael Salzhauer, explaining to kids what Mum is undergoing.
I've heard Dr. Salzhauer interviewed, and his purpose is noble, though many take issue with the greater context. Once Mum has committed to having cosmetic surgery, surely it makes sense to provide support for the kids.
Ange felt confused as a child when her own mother had a facelift. Her experience adds a little support to the claim that this is a necessary book.
Wendy was somewhat less tolerant of the whole cosmetic surgery industry - the frivolous part of it certainly does bother a lot of us - and reminded listeners that Mum used to come home from the hospital with a new baby, not a new face.
Ange & Wendy, 20 minutes of intelligent boomer chick talk - long enough for a coffee break. Available by podcast from ABC Radio (Australia).
